Hospital Interior Design | Emma Children's Hospital AMC | Amsterdam | Opera Amsterdam

OPERA Amsterdam designs interior of the Emma Children's Hospital AMC (EKZ)

The Emma Children's Hospital, situated on the top floor of the Academic Medical Centre in Amsterdam is currently undergoing a drastic transformation. The first unit, Infants Care and Staff, became operational in January 2010, next phases ( children, teenagers, oncology, surgery, intensive care, theatre, playgrounds, lounges, terraces and area's for contemplation ) will be completed up until 2013.
In total the project's footprint is 8800 m2.

The architects from OD205 signed up for the architectural design and OPERA Amsterdam is responsible for the interior design. OPERA interpreted the question to modernize the Children's Hospital at a more fundamental level and designed an integrated approach for the project. After all, the EKZ doesn't only treat infants but also young adolescents and all ages in between. Each of these groups requires different surroundings and age-specific facilities, while at the same time the hospital also needs to be perceived as a coherent structure. Besides the (young) patients, the needs of parents en employees can't be neglected.
Naturally the design does not interfere with the primary processes of the hospital.

The Water tower | Meditation space | Designed By Rocha Tombal Architecten

Water tower
 2006-2008

On the outside nothing seems to have changed. The Water tower looks like it has been built in 1895. But if you enter the big round brick building you experience an enormous white sculpture; it stares at you inviting you into another world, that of meditation.
In the design for the narrow monumental water tower, where the creation of m2 for the new functions and the internal introduction of a fire escape forms the assignment, the legibility and respect for the monumental spaces become the biggest challenge and it’s most formidable quality.
The crucial starting-point has been the combination of all facilities with the closed staircase and the situation of this as a huge piece of furniture in the middle of the space as main structuring element.
The staircase which forms a meditative labyrinth climbing upwards forms the expression of the new functions and creates a route which offers varied experiences and triggers different emotions. At the same time it brings you to the climax of the tower: the steel tank where a cafeteria is placed. The new introduced form contrasts strongly with the existing. The staircase directs by its tight geometry and the gleaming white finishing, the attention to the hardness of the brickwork.
The most important ingredient for the experience of the space is the use of light. By “rings of light” between old and new walls; led spots in the floors which, like little stars, seem to bring you into another dimension or indirect lightening, each space gets another color nuance and pronounced environment. Exciting in the stair case, intimate in the meditation rooms, serene in the water tank....more

Regent Terrace Spa | Designed By Keppie Design

Brief
Further to completing the interior of the top three floors of this Georgian townhouse, Keppie was requested to design the basement area to provide additional accommodation and a leisure facility exclusively for the Client's usage. Whilst the treatment to the main house was relatively traditional the basement was to change to a contemporary styling and have a similar quality and luxury demonstrated in the upper floors.

Response
The Client brief for the leisure area was to include a spa bath, sauna, steam room and multi-purpose gym. Much thought was given to the layout, a restricted space both in plan and available height. Wet facilities were contained in two linked areas and the gym separated by a glass partition. Great care was taken to accommodate all the required plant equipment and to ensure ventilation, electrical, audio and visual equipment were integrated within the design.
Considerable research into sourcing specialist suppliers and installers that provided facilities generally used commercially but that could be adapted for a domestic environment. A restricted finishes palette was proposed that would ensure a light open space and had reference to the rich quality materials used in the main house. Many bespoke joinery items carefully detailed provided required storage and housing for specialist audio and media equipment that integrated within the structure and fabric of the space.

Outcome

Meticulous planning utilising every available corner has allowed this area to blossom into a light open space. Variable lighting that allows for a variety of mood settings, integrated sound and media equipment, rich materials of natural stone and timber now combine to provide a luxurious indulgent facility that would equally be appropriate if found in a top-end hotel. The facility provides an oasis of calm and rejuvenation within the privacy of the Client's personal dwelling instantly accessible on his visits to the house....more
